I really love to take portraits...some days when all I've looked at is food, taking a break and shooting a portrait is exactly what I need. It's a whole different concept. The initial thought is the same: planning the shoot, deciding on the props, deciding on a background or location is very similiar to propping and styling food. But, the similarity ends there. In order to get a portrait I like, I literally take at least 30 shots, I'm lucky if I get one or two that I really feel personifies that indiidual. Thank goodness we now have digital, maybe that's why I have enjoyed shooting portraits more in the last 10 years since the invention of widestream digital. It certainly allows me much more freedom and saves me so much money. Instead of a posed shot, I really hunt to find the real person and spirit. My littlest, Lily Lulu, has the tendency to be silly, make goofy faces and not take herself so seriously. I love her freckles, she doesn't seem to mind them, but give her another year. She's at a great age to take portraits because of her looseness, she follows direction well and basically has fun doing it, quite a joy to shoot. My oldest, Sophie, is a talented photographer and editor herself, she knows what she likes and while I may find a shot I love, she most likely does not like it, the age of 13! I have learned so much from her in this last year of shooting portraits, she is very style oriented, creative and hip to the trends, which has only added to my year of growing through my photography and styling. Today is a portrait day, tomorrow may be a food day. Enjoy!
